Joe Sylvester captured the news and important facts about the Kauai Marathon 2012. He arrived very early in the morning to get the key video of the race start and photos of the winners at the finish line.
I arrived after playing tennis but it was still quite a show at the finish line. The wonderful Ron Wiley was calling the name, city and run time for each finisher in his beautiful Kong Radio basso voice.

Just before that moment of Ron Wiley’s announcement, the Kapaa High School cheerleading team was cheering in each runner. This photo and two videos of the cheerleading squad was taken after at least five hours of standing and cheering.

Watching the medal presenters give medals to the appreciative Kauai Marathon finishers was entertaining. The full marathon and half marathon winner medals were differentiated by engraving on the back of the medal and the color of the lanyard. These deeper colored lanyards were for the full marathon. The lighter colored lanyards were for the half marathon.
I met Michael Hagen from the Army Reserves who told me that they had representation with 83 runners from 23 states and an entourage of more than 200 to cheer them on. There was originally a larger group but some were deployed for the ongoing east coast hurricane.
I met Julie Weiss Marathon Goddess who is running 52 marathons in 52 weeks for pancreatic cancer awareness.

As you can see the Kauai Marathon is a whole lot of fun. Plan your trip now to Kauai for the marathon next year September 1st. Better yet, come train here at least once, then come back in September.
