Kauai Hawaii stunning blue sky and beautiful waters played host to an inspiring event complete with breaching whales, healing, shamanic style music played on indigenous instruments and a rainbow crowd at Kealia Beach Outlook on January 7th. This was far more than whale watching. It was a celebration of the whales, an appreciation of our oceans, our earth and our oneness with each other.

The visual feast of this event was dramatically enhanced by the sounds. John Dumas and Elijay Ray filled the air and our hearts with healing music.

These are two short clips of John Dumas bringing his digeridoo to members of the crowd. Last year, the first time this event was held, the crowd was much smaller so John was able to touch each attendee individually. But even those of us who were not in direct contact certainly felt the vibration and healing waves of his hand crafted instrument.

In this second clip, John focuses on a baby in a woman’s lap. That baby was probably already in very good shape but from my perspective it looked particularly calm and happy for the rest of the event.

John Dumas Didgeridoo on Baby - photo by Elsa Flores Almaraz

Elijah Ray contributed his voice, a kind of hand drum called a dumbek, and various rattles and shakers…as well as a peruvian stringed instrument called a Charango.

When Elijah does a full concert experience, he plays the acoustic guitar, piano, drums, and setup of loop pedals that allows him to create the kinds of layering and soundscapes that can be heard in the “Soundlight Vol. 1″ recording that I link to in his bio below.

Elijah Ray With Drum - photo by Ray Gordon

Part of what made this event so exceptional were the contributions from the crowd.

Nina Monasevich and Kalasara Setaysha are on the board of Kohola Leo which translates to Whale Voice. Nina has been an advocate for cetaceans and their ocean home since 1976. A major concern for the magnificent whales that visit Hawaii is underwater sound pollution that does not harm us nor our visitors but that can be damaging to the sound sensitive whales. Koholo Leo is striving to increase sound protected areas for the whales. The Ocean Noise Coalition provides information about this issue. Kelly Kelsey, who took a leadership role in organizing this event is passionate about Kohola Leo’s mission.

The theme of the event was that we are all one with the ocean, the whales, the earth, the sky and each other. The opening ceremony and the digeridoo music addressed the native American four directions and like Hawaii, the crowd represented a rainbow of the major tribes of man.

Both John Dumas and Elijah Ray produce shamanic sound using indigenous instruments. “There is a connection to the earth and to the music and the feelings that get uncovered when we connect to the earths energies.” says Elijah. “It is fun interacting with the audience.
The energy is very positive uplifting kind of music, connecting people to their full potential.” adds John.

John Dumas
John Dumas, M.S. is an artist, musician, inspirational teacher and pioneer in sound healing. Healing through sound is the culmination of John’s educational background in the fine arts, Psychology and study of indigenous cultures. While living in Sedona, Arizona, John was guided by Spirit to create and play the didgeridoo, an instrument used in sacred ceremonies by the (ab-original) people of Australia for over 50,000 years. The didgeridoo produces a unique vibratory resonance that mimics the sounds of nature, awakening our primordial essence. When played over the body, it is capable of unlocking cellular memory and balancing the rhythmic flow of the charkas. The didgeridoo can be made of many natural materials – John prefers the century plant (Agave Americana) cactus. This plant takes approximately 35 years to mature and in one season will produce a shaft shooting up some 40 feet in height with a stock of up to 6 inches in diameter at the base. The cactus then dies and leaves a towering stalk – perfect for making didgeridoos.
John has developed a unique sound therapy/healing ceremony that is titled “Shamanic Journey into Dreamtime.” This voyage into the dreamtime is an experiential interactive sound therapy that facilitates the healing of our mind, body and spirit. With the intention of love and compassion, John opens the doorway into the dreamtime, an altered state of time and space, producing awakened dreaming.
The Native American flute has also played an important role in John’s healing work. Sedona is a flute player’s dream, where there are numerous canyons with ancient cave dwellings. It was here that John first heard the live sound of the Native flute echoing through the canyon walls, that later inspired him to make and play his own. After a vision quest in the mountains of Virginia, John started creating multiple chambered flutes, The ‘Heart Flute of the Four Winds’ is one that produces four resonating chambers that opens the heart space while honoring the four directions. John’s many passions and talents have led him to create hand-made, one-of-a-kind, musical instruments, emitting profoundly beautiful tones and intense vibrations.
John performs concerts and leads workshops traveling internationally with his unique handcrafted flutes and didgeridoos. He lives on Kauai, Hawaii where he creates his one of a kind instruments, performs concerts, and facilitates sound healing ceremonies with groups and in private sessions.

Elijah Ray
+Elijah- (aka “Elijah Ray”) is the founder and co-creator of the Band of Light , and has over a decade of experience as a performer, healer, teacher, and recording artist. He has shared his inspiring and transformational music from up and down the West Coast to Hawaii, New York, Amsterdam, and Australia, New Zealand and Peru.

Currently based on the Island of Kauai, +Elijah- hosts ongoing, community empowering concert experiences called the “Band of Light +E-xperience”, which serves as a vehicle for consciousness co-creation, in the realms of Music, Dance, Art, and as an open forum for sustainable solutions and community empowerment.

At a Band of Light experience, +Elijah- invites us all to realize that “we are all in the band” as he weaves together a musical tapestry of co-creation and participation, that blends the worlds of concert, workshop, and spiritual revival all in to one!

His Love for the Earth’s Oceans has led him to work and play with the Whales and Dolphins each year, recording their incredible songs, and weaving them into the Band of Light music. +Elijah-’s first album release, “The Preamble”, has crossed the oceans into over 22 countries. Also celebrated worldwide is his creation of the soundtrack for “The Indigo Evolution”, a documentary released by Internationally acclaimed author James Twyman. +Elijah- was also a featured “Indigo” in the film, sharing his spiritual insights along with such luminaries as Doreen Virtue, Neal Donald Walsh, and Dr. Matsuro Emoto.

This album cover links to Elijah’s website and a 38 minute audio clip from this album.

Elijah does concerts and recordings in several styles. This one is “shamangelic” a style of work and sound that references a sound that brings in the higher frequency of the heavens – Elijah’s work builds a bridge between heaven and earth.

Elijah says of John Dumas “We both worked in sound and sound healing. My relationship with John bloomed over the years through doing events as sound healers. There is a specific way that we show up by bringing in the healing and transformational aspects of the sound experience. We co-create and blossom together. John has a lower frequency coming from the earth.”

We are using social media to market this organization, an example of Social Media for Social Sustainability. Marketing costs to publicize our events will thus be minimal. We recognize that there is nothing eco-friendly about printed materials as a primary means of publicizing our events. Flyer production will be very limited and produced in as eco-friendly a method as possible. For example, the one batch we did for this meeting was kindly produced by 22North on the back of their menus, 2-up on a page. Any monies that are collected for meeting or organization sponsorships will be used to support worthy non-profit organizations on Kauai.

22North Restaurant, which is itself a truly sustainable venture on Kauai, is our gracious host. 22North will be providing light snacks. There will be a cash bar to purchase drinks at reasonable prices.

22North is also kindly serving fresh coconut water from Honua Lani Gardens. The non-alcoholic version of this will be free to attendees.

Attendance is FREE of charge.

22North Restaurant Night View - photo by Ray Gordon

Koloa Rum Company, which produces Rum sustainably on Kauai, is kindly providing rum for the event so that 22North can prepare a delicious farm to bar, all eco-friendly cocktail for you to try at a discounted price. Wine and other beverages will also be available.

Aside from enjoying casual networking with like-minded individuals there will be a circle discussion following a few brief presentations:

Jai Roberts: Sustainable Gardening
Felicia Cowden: Akami Backyard
Lee Roversi: News from North Country Farms
Ken Stokes: inter-institutional Sustainability Action Team
Linda Sherman: Social Media for Social Sustainability

Attendee Circle Discussion Topic: What is your top of mind sustainability challenge?
Attendees will offer their suggestions.

Please RSVP on the Sustainability Forums Facebook event, or email us at: info at SustainabilityForums.org

Both the Kukui’ula Outrigger Canoe Club and the Pu’uwai Canoe Club support not just the Hawaiian culture of outrigger canoe paddling, they train keiki (children) on Kauai to paddle with youth paddling programs. This activity builds strong bodies, character and a solid understanding of teamwork for these children. These events are fundraisers for the clubs’ keiki programs. The proceeds go towards buying paddles for the kids, safety vests/rescue buoys for the canoes and race registration fees for them. In addition, 10% of the proceeds from the Family Fun Run will be donated to The Mayor’s Office Youth Health Initiatives. Mayor Carvalho himself will officiate over the 1 Mile Keiki Fun Run!!

Social Media Day is a worldwide event created by Mashable in 2010. The first one was a huge success. On Social Media Day 2010, there were more than 600 Meetups in 93 countries with nearly 12,000 attendees. Thursday June 30 is the second annual international event. The point of Social Media Day is to celebrate the advancements in technology and social media that enrich our lives virtually in the offline world recognizing the importance of in-person relationships.

Social Media Day is organized by city and we are organizing a Kauai Social Media Day in Lihue. Founded in 2005, Mashable is a major force in the area of Social Media. If you are not yet subscribed to the Mashable.com newsletter and you have any interest in social media, I recommend this free service. The Mashable website currently gets more than 40 million page views monthly and is a very prolific provider of guides and news related to social and digital media as well as technology.

Mashable Founder Pete Cashmore with Linda Sherman at BlogWorld 2008.

Our celebration on Kauai has two parts.
The purpose is to support economic prosperity on Kauai. Using social media to bring our voices to the world with information and aloha spirit from Kauai promotes positive feelings and awareness of our Garden Island to the world.

Part One: Lunch at 22North Restaurant
Purpose
To gather small business and individual proprietors to discuss social media

Who Should Come
You would like to discuss social media because you think it might be important to your business, your non-profit or your organization.

What To Expect
You will get your questions about social media answered, you will make friends who are also interested in the topic, and you will likely run into friends you already know.

Time
June 30, Thursday
Noon – 1:30PM

Location
22North Restaurant at Kilohana in Lihue

Event Cost
Free Admission
22North will provide separate checks for your lunch. They have a $10 special lunch and other great choices, so don’t be concerned about the cost. This is the 22North Restaurant Lunch Menu.

Please RSVP so that we can get a head count. To RSVP, please comment here. And/or it would be great if you are already on Meetup.com or if you are willing to set up an account on meetup.com – add your RSVP on the Social Media Day Meetup Page.

Part Two: 15 minutes For Your Social Media Questions with Social Media Expert Linda Sherman
On June 30th, Social Media Day, from 10 – 11am and 2:30 – 4pm I will be providing free 15 minute telephone consultations.

I am offering this if you are or will be using social media for a business, non-profit or organization on Kauai. Please contact me for an appointment on Social Media Day at the following email: Linda dot Sherman at CourageGroup.com. Please include a link to your personal Facebook profile or some other way that I can recognize you. Your Facebook profile link looks like http://Facebook.com/LindaSherman If it is still just a number, that is fine, you can sent that, but you should know that you can grab your Facebook Vanity URL by going to http://Facebook.com/UserName.

Best Practices Social Media

I am a professional member of the Social Media Club of Kauai and a proponent of Best Practices Social Media.
One Best Practice you may not be aware of is that Facebook Terms of Service clearly state that a Facebook Profile should represent a real individual. Facebook Profiles are not to be used for the names of companies, organizations, places or brands. If you are doing that, you are in danger of having your Facebook Profile taken down. You should take steps to migrate that profile to a Facebook Page. You can tell that your Facebook Page is a page and not a profile if at the top there is a “like” button. If you have friends rather than likes, you have a Facebook Profile.

You do not need to be on Twitter to participate but if you wish to talk about this event on Twitter, please use both #smday and #SMDayKauai. The following link goes to this page: http://bit.ly/SocialMediaDayKauai

Social Media Club members in Honolulu are meeting in the evening at the Honolulu Social Media Day Meetup. They are using #SMDayHNL on Twitter.

Taste of Hawaii – the Ultimate Sunday Brunch – the annual fund raising event for the Kauai community was absolutely wonderful this year. The Rotary Club of Kapa’a worked really hard at planning and producing the event and it showed.

There were lots of shady spots to sit down and enjoy the wonderful dishes the generous chefs had prepared. The music was excellent, inspiring dancing and putting everyone in a great mood.

Taste of Hawaii – the Ultimate Sunday Brunch – is an annual fund raising event for the Kauai community that Ray and I enjoy attending every year. The folks at the Rotary Club of Kapa’a work really hard at planning and producing this event. Thanks to the generosity of the chefs, beverage companies and musicians who donate their services and product, you definitely get your money’s worth attending this upscale, delicious, festive event. June 5, 2011 is the 23rd year for this popular happening.

The Rotary Club of Kapa’a is a volunteer, non-profit group of business people dedicated to the motto “Service Above Self.” Net proceeds from Taste of Hawaii goes to help worthy non-profit groups and to fund scholarships for high school and community college students. A portion of the money collected goes abroad where, working in partnership with Rotary clubs in Third World countries, they help fund basic necessities of life such as water wells to provide clean drinking water and toilet and hand-washing stations for rural schools.

Taste of Hawaii has been voted the best community event several years running by The Garden Island readers. You may wonder why it is called Taste of Hawaii and not Taste of Kauai. It is because 40+ of Hawaii’s best chefs, 15+ beverage stations (beer, fine wines, water, soft drinks, coffee and specialty coffee drinks and smoothies) 10+ music groups.

Held at Smith’s Tropical Paradise
